Bloomberg London

Temporary Welfare Facilities

Brief Description – The project was to design and build a temporary welfare facility over three of the South Building for the construction workforce and site management at Bloomberg London to cater for 2,000 operatives. The overall ambition was to create an exemplar facility for the workforce particularly to give them a dining experience to rival the High Street eateries close to the project.

The Challenge – The project had a number of constraints which had to be overcome during the construction phase notably that a Tower Crane went through the area of the building where the facility was being built and was being removed half way through our construction period. We had to work with the Concrete Frame Specialist to phase our works in the area of the slab infill and subsequent back propping. Other permanent works were also on going in the vicinity of our works including fit-out works to the core which we needed to co-ordinate access with including leave down areas to allow them access for their plant and materials.

The Design – The most unique element of the project was engaging Central Saint Martins in the design of the canteen area to make it a dining experience for the workforce. Their students brought a real vitality to the project and their desire to create an area that the workforce would be keen to utilise rubbed off on all of us involved. The students engaged with the workforce prior to commencing their concept designs and utilised this feedback to create a fantastic space which they now enjoy everyday.
